The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin aqua marina "sea water" and thus refers to the pale blue to blue-green or "sea-green" color of the mineral
The quality designation "Santa Maria" (after the mine of the same name in Ceará, Brazil) is given to particularly fine, deep blue aquamarines.
The blue variety of the beryl group is characterized by its high hardness grade of 7.5 to 8 and covers all shades of blue from glacial blue to a deep sea blue. The most valuable color variety is the famous deep blue Santa Maria, which gets its name from the mine of the same name in Ceará, Brazil.
